Teak Is Best For Long Lasting Patio Furniture

by Rebecca Kenzie

When you are considering a purchase of outdoor furniture it needs to be carefully chosen. You need to consider the elements that it will be exposed to. You can not go wrong by choosing teak outdoor furniture. It is truely one of the most popular choices of furniture to be placed outdoors.

If you desire durability and hardness than teak outdoor furniture should be your first choice. Teak wood has beautiful tone and grain which makes it a joy to own. It is such a stand up product due to the resin oil that is naturally in the hardwood. This helps to ward off insects as well as making it repel water and the drying effects of the sun.

You will also find Silica in teak, which makes teak outdoor furniture more durable by preventing warping, deforming and rotting. The initial appearance of your teak outdoor furniture is a warm golden color. As it is exposed to the elements of the outdoors, it will eventually lose its shine and change color to grey. Do not worry; it will not lose its durability even as it changes color.

One of the classic ways to choose teak outdoor furniture is to first, of course, check out the wood. If you see that it has cracks or chips or other breaks than that might be a sign of low durability. Since wood damage begins with these sorts of blemishes you want to find teak outdoor furniture that is sealed without any outward signs of stress.

Another item to consider in your quest for the perfect teak patio set is to be sure it is totally made of teak. To save money you will find that some manufacturers insert different kinds of wood in places that the eye might not catch. Take your time to find out about the furniture. If the wood looks different such as different wood grain, colors and texture, from the rest of the item than be wary of purchase.

If you see knots in the teak outdoor furniture you intend to buy, consider the implication that the knot is one vulnerable spot where decay can start.

Speak to your teak outdoor furniture supplier. Find out how the teak is dried. You want to purchase teak that has been kiln dried. This is best as it eliminates warping and cracking. If the tag or ad says air dried or sun dried wood you will find that it is a lesser quality teak outdoor furniture even if the wood appears to be of higher quality. Since kiln drying is the most thorough method of drying the wood, any other technique is inferiour.

Many people have heard of the quality and hardiness of teak outdoor furniture but this does not mean that all of it is made of high quality teak. It is best to follow this guide in choosing the right kind of teak furniture for your outdoor needs.

Your outdoor patio furniture should last for a long time. You are making a major investment in your home as well as in your back yard patio plan. Teak makes a wonderful addition to any outdoor landscaping long range planning.

One of the easiest ways in which you can often add value to the price of your home is having a beautifully designed and laid out garden. But not only does beautiful home garden landscaping look pleasing, but it can also offer a sanctuary away from the stresses of modern living. Before you actually go out and start work on your garden it is a good idea to have some sort of plan of what you want.

Certainly, when it comes to finding ideas for your perfect garden design there are a host of books, magazines and sites online which can provide you with these. So before you even get out the fork and the spade it is a good idea to carry out some research before you do. Also a quick trip to your local garden centre and they may have some layouts which they are using to display their plants in that may be suitable for you to use in yours.

Below we offer a few tips that will help you when it comes to designing your perfect garden landscape and which could also save you money as well.

1. It is important that before you start planning the design of your garden you see what you currently have in it. It is at this stage you should be making a decision as to what features and plants you wish to retain and what once you wish to lose. This will then provide you with an idea of just how much space you have to play with when it comes to including new plants and features into it.

2. Another important factor that you need to take into consideration when designing a new garden landscape is the actual style of home you live in. A modern home with a country cottage garden just simply will not work. Also you need to factor in just how much time you will have available to actually care for your garden once it has been planted. Many people who simply do not have the time to spare are going for gardens which require little or no upkeep to remain looking good.

3. When you are planning your garden layout you need to think about ensuring that you have space for other amenities. Certainly if you want a seating and entertainment area this needs to be taken into consideration. Plus you need to think about the children and offering them an area where they can play so that the rest of the garden is not ruined.

As long as you spend some time before hand designing a layout that you feel works for you and the space available you should finish up with what is your perfect outdoor space. The internet is one of the best places to find a wealth of information that can further help you with coming up with the perfect garden design to meet all your particular requirements.

If you keep the above mentioned tips in mind then when it comes to home garden landscaping you will be able to design something that meets all your particular requirements. So the more time spent in the planning stage will end up saving you a lot of time and money when it comes to actually doing the work. Plus if in the future you choose to move you will find that it has added value on to your home as well.

Types Of Bird Houses And The Birds They House

Monday, May 26th, 2008
by Chris Channing

The avid bird watcher will enjoy specific types of exotic birds as much as the normal plethora of birds that come and go in different regions. But giving the birds a solid form of housing can keep a certain type of liked bird in the area longer, and can give bird watchers an up close view of nature.

For some types of birds, it is necessary to use multiple housing compartments. This is because some species of birds will only nest as a group, and therefore the common birdhouse will not be able to meet their requirements. The acceptable type of birdhouse for colonized birds, such as the Purple Martin bird, looks much like apartment complexes rather than a traditional birdhouse.

Some birds will only take residence in a birdhouse if the hole into the residence is small enough. This is true in the case of the swallow family of birds, who need a hole no bigger than an inch and half or predators will come into the birdhouse and cause mayhem. To appeal to a swallow, a birdhouse must be anywhere from an inch to an inch and a half and no more, or they will try to find safer living arrangements.

Although many birds require specific things in order for them to get proper living arrangements, many aren’t so picky. Most will be perfectly fine in taking a living in a generic birdhouse with the normal features and housing compartments. Birds such as the woodpecker will take residence in average birdhouses in frequency- meaning the average birdhouse will often attract a large amount of attention from the bird community.

Other types of birds will need a large space in which to build their own nest in. Just like the woodpecker, the Great Crested Flycatcher will be able to make use of most conventional birdhouses. But this bird will attempt to make its own nest in the birdhouse- meaning it should be slightly larger than the average birdhouse most are accustomed to. It’s important to include an easy way of cleaning the birdhouse when making them.

While there have been quite a few different living arrangements discussed, many birds will be perfectly fine with taking up residence in a tree or bush. This means that bird watchers don’t have to conform to every whim of a specific bird to try and get them to take residence in a birdhouse- but the extra effort helps.

Final Thoughts

The excellent sport of bird watching is something to be enjoyed by all ages. It helps out the bird community, gives elderly and young children entertainment, and gives homes a very homely and kind feel to them. Just keep in mind that attracting the right birds may take specific requirements- although the average birdhouse will do just fine in giving bird lovers a form of release.

Tips for Buying a Log Cabin for your Garden

Sunday, May 25th, 2008
by Spencer Wilkins

The cost of log cabins varies greatly depending on the kinds of logs which have been used and the size of the property. You will find that those cabins that have been built using handcrafted logs will cost much more than those where the logs have been milled.

It is important therefore before you actually decide on getting such a cabin built you know the difference between milled and handcrafted logs. Generally, those that are milled have been prepared using either a sawmill, a lathe or a planer. This then ensures that each log will be cut to a specific profile or shape. As you will soon discover milled logs have a far more uniformed shape and size to them compared to handcrafted ones.

Also, logs, which have been milled for a cabin, will have been air or kiln, dried to remove any excess moisture before construction begins. This will ensure that sufficient amounts of moisture have been removed and prevent the possibility of the building shrinking too much once the wood dries out further.

As for the surface of these logs, they are generally smooth and flat and could even have been coped as well. Also in a large number of cases, they will have tongue and groove joints along the sides where they are to join. This not only makes the construction process easier but helps to provide a much stronger and stable outer shell to the cabin. But if you want, the outer side of the log can remain rough to provide a much more rustic look to your cabin.

The most favoured types of woods, which are commonly used to produce milled logs for cabins, are pine, cedar, spruce or fir. The least expensive type of log cabin using the milled process are ones that are made from pine or spruce whilst those from cedar tend to be the most expensive.

Now let us look at a cabin that is made using handcrafted logs. These will have been prepared by either being hand peeled with a drawknife or water peeled. The logs used are only a matter of days or weeks old after being cut down so will still be green. Because of the size of the logs this ones are usually allowed to dry in the air as kiln drying is a very expensive process. Also there are not many kilns are available that these sizes of logs would be able to fit into.

Just like with milled log cabins those who make handcrafted ones like to use pine and spruce trees. However, there are some log cabin manufacturers who prefer to use either Douglas fir, Oak, Juniper, Cyprus or Alpine Fir (True Firs) instead.

As mentioned the cost you pay for buying and having log cabins constructed will not only depend on the way in which the logs have been prepared. You also need to take into consideration the size of the cabin you are having built. The bigger the cabin then the more labour intensive and the more logs will be needed in order to build it. If you want to save money but would like a large cabin then you are better off going for milled rather than handcrafted logs.

Caring for your Teak Garden Furniture

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008
by Spencer Wilkins

Yes having teak garden furniture in your garden can really improve the look and the way in which you would use it. However, if you do intend to keep this type of furniture outside through out the year in order for it to last you need to learn how it should be cared for.

Teak is a hardwood and this is why furniture made from this wood is very durable. Also, the wood is much denser than other types and has high levels of resinous oil that means it has a much longer life. The oil within this wood helps to not only make it resistant to moisture but also to drying out.

Initially you have to make a choice between whether you want to purchase furniture, which comes in its raw state, or one that has been treated using a teak oil. When you first buy your teak garden furniture, you will find that it has a golden color to it. However, over time and when the elements get to work on it, the wood will turn a silver grey color instead.

If you are quite happy for the wood to turn silver grey then once it has there is very little you will need to do in order for it retain it. For those, who however would prefer their would to retain that golden hue then it is important that they apply a layer of teak oil.

For furniture, which will be outside in the garden throughout the year, you will need to apply the teak oil every 6 months. However, before you actually apply the oil you will need to clean the furniture first.

To do this you take some warm water (with a mild detergent mixed into it) and then use a soft damp cloth to wipe off and remove any dust or grit. After you have done this, you now need to leave the wood to dry naturally before you actually apply the oil.

It is important that you only use a specialist teak oil on the furniture and apply this using a lint free cloth. You could use a spray gun that is filled with the oil but using a cloth will ensure that the oil is spread evenly over the surface of the furniture. Now you need to leave it for sometime until it feels tacky.

Once you feel the oil is tacky you take yet another clean lint free cloth and this one you wipe across the surface of the teak garden furniture in order to remove any excess oil. After this cleaning stage, you leave the wood for a further hour before you then take another clean cloth that is free of lint and this will be used to polish up the surface of the wood and present that golden color you were after.
