Bird-Friendly Landscape Design

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Should you wish to attract all sorts of birdlife into your garden for the sheer pleasure of watching their antics, you must include some bird friendly features in your landscape. These are features that will attract the birds, not frighten them away. Here are a few ideas to assist you in your task.

Use Feeders to Attract Birds

Birds love to have a ready supply of food and a birdfeeder is a great way to achieve this. There are many types and styles of birdfeeders available. Some can be purchased online from petstores such as havahart.com. Obviously, you will need to purchase the appropriate seeds for the birds. Smaller birds love hulled sunflower seeds and millet. These feeders can be hung from tree branches around the garden or even from your patio if you have one.

Hummingbirds will be attracted to feeders that have a mixture of sugar and water and robins adore smaller seeds and dried fruit such as raisins.

Include berry producing plants

If you include plants that produce berries, you are sure to have birds visiting your garden. Any form of berry will attract a variety of birds, including those that we humans don’t consume such as hawthorn, mistletoe, honeysuckle vine and pyracantha. If you don’t mind sharing your produce with the birds, then blueberries, strawberries and cherries could be included. Birds such as robins, mockingbirds, bluebirds, sparrows and waxwings will come in their numbers to your garden.

Provide a supply of worms

Many meat eating birds will appreciate it greatly if you create an area that attracts worms. A damp spot where you place kitchen scraps (vegetable peelings etc, not meat) will encourage worms and serve a dual purpose of conditioning the garden soil as well as feeding these birds.

Set out a birdbath

Birds need a supply of fresh water from which to drink and to clean themselves and a bird bath is ideal. One that is around 1-2 inches in depth and above ground, to protect the birds from predators, is the best.

Have a garden pond

A garden pond will be another source of water for the birds as well as a home to turtles and frogs. Some birds prefer ponds to birdbaths because of the nature of the water.

Use wind breaking techniques

Windbreaks are vital in areas that suffer from extreme climates. This can be achieved by a sensible arrangement of trees, with taller deciduous trees at the very back. These will protect the middle sized trees which in turn will shelter the shrubs that are planted towards the front.

Help birds to build nests

Your birdlife will benefit from your efforts if you gather up some nest building material and placing them in piles or old onion bags where they can access them. Suitable nest building materials include lint, short threads of yarn, short hair, dried grass or hay, bird feathers and more.

Frighten away the predators

Ensure that potential predators such as stray dogs or cats are kept away from your small yard. You should ensure that your fencing is secure to prevent access to these strays. Keep your own pets enclosed to prevent them wandering through any of your landscaping accessories in your yard and frightening the birds. Put bells on the collars of your pets to warn the birds of their presence.

Even after you have done all these things, there is still no actual guarantee that birds will visit as it is dependent upon the types and numbers of birds in your area. Research the birdlife that is in your area and plan your landscape according to their needs.

DIY Landscape Irrigation System

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

An irrigation system is a vital part of any good landscaping design. A successful one requires careful planning. There are two types of irrigation systems:

* sprinkler irrigation

* drip irrigation

Sprinkler Irrigation System

This type of irrigation system is where water is pushed out through holes or nozzles under pressure. The water that is forced out forms a spray.

The process of laying out a sprinkler irrigation system can be complicated if you do not get the basic ideas correct. Read up on how to do it before you start.

The most important thing to consider when planning your sprinkler irrigation system is consistency of water spray. All areas should receive an equivalent amount of water over a period of time. This minimizes water wastage and prevents pooling or lack of water in some areas.

Before you lay any pipes, use the basic landscape design plans and carefully draw in the irrigation system. Once this is accurately completed, you will need to choose your sprinkler heads (do you need fixed heads, rotating heads etc) so that the area is covered properly. Then you will have to select a nozzle on which you will place the sprinkler.

The correct placement of a variety of sprinklers is necessary in wider areas of the garden. Determine the spacing based on the radius of the sprinkler. If the sprinkler radius is 10 feet, then the sprinklers should be ideally spaced at 10 foot intervals. Spray pressure is also important - you do not want the water sprayed so thinly that is is lost to the wind, nor so heavily that it is wasted.

Drip Irrigation System

Drip or micro irrigation provides water to the plants under slow pressure and uses plastic tubing that is placed at the base of the plant to ensure that the minimum of evaporation or fertilizer run off occurs. This system also helps to prevent pathogens and will reduce undesirable grass growth.

Micro irrigation is relatively easy to install and maintain in comparison to sprinkler irrigation. The component parts are readily available and inexpensive.

You only need the following components to create a drip irrigation system: U shaped pins (to secure the pipe), PE tube with T-connectors where necessary, emitters and an automatic timer if considered necessary.

To begin the process, lay the PE tube (preferably made more flexible by laying it out in the sun’s rays for a time) in a line through the garden, making sure that the pipe passes between all of the plants. Strategically placed T-connectors will help with this and the U shaped pins will secure the pipe in place. Once you are happy with the layout, you can then poke a series of holes along the pipe and install the emitters. These should be placed under the plants at their base. You can then bury the pipe under some mulch so it is not visible.

Installing a sunroom kit yourself

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008
by Andrew Caxton

For years you had no option but to hire a company or the contractor to build your sunroom in the house. But it’s no longer same, now you have plenty of options available, you can also order a do-it-yourself kit from a leading manufacturing company and install a sunroom yourself. All the necessary elements for sunroom are shipped by the company at your doorsteps so that you don’t have to worry about any thing. The idea behind do-it-yourself sunroom kits is to save your money when installing a sunroom. Putting it together will require no expertise but your attention.

It will help you cut the costs of building the sunroom if you have a limited budget. You will not only be able cut the labor costs but also you can cut the role of “middle-man” character from the process. Getting the shipment directly from the manufacturing company can save the cost on the materials also. Another advantage that you can get is to order an energy efficient kit that will also cut your energy as well as maintenance costs in the future. First you should understand that price of a sunroom kit will vary according to your requirements and the condition of your house. If you are planning to build a small aluminum sunroom on an existing cement block or deck then it will be less expensive than constructing a block foundation sunroom with wooden windows and doors with dual locking systems.

If there is an existing deck or cement block in your house, then it can be an ideal location to install your do-it-yourself sunroom kit. A cement block is an ideal location because it is already prepared for some type of construction. In case you have the cement block then you should measure it and order a sunroom according to its size. But if there is no cement block or deck in your house then you need to decide the proper location for your sunroom. You will also have to prepare the area for the sunroom before you start the construction. This will also increase the amount of work required to install a sunroom. You will need someone to construct that cement block for you obviously because you can not build it on your own.

You should consider in some things when purchasing the do-it-yourself sunroom kits. You should understand that these kits are designed for those sunrooms which aren’t going to be connected to your Heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. If you want your sunroom to be connected with your HVAC system then you should not do it on yourself basis. You should hire a sunroom contractor for the construction or installation of your sunroom. If you install it yourself then you can only use fans and portable coolers and heaters to make your sunroom comfortable. Sometimes this is also fine for you because of the climate you live in. Connecting your sunroom to your HVAC system will also cost you a lot more, so if you have a limited budget you don’t need to opt for it.

Feeding and Growing with Changing Seasons

Saturday, September 6th, 2008
by Keith Markensen

The majority of your houseplants require year round care, but what indoor gardeners don’t consider is that the level of care provided may need to change with the season. Most houseplants actively grow and bloom in the spring and summer months, which tapers off as fall approaches and often ceases altogether as the winter months take hold.

These growing cycles are predicated on a few different variables. The main one is sunlight and the amount of that valuable resource that is available to them. This naturally lessens in the winter as the days become shorter, and the sky itself becomes more overcast in general. The second is simply continuing on the naturally growing cycle they experienced in the wild, which again was also influenced by the weather. Even though the ‘weather’ and temperature in your house is typically uniform and static no matter the season, this genetic disposition in the plant still holds some sway.

Here’s what you can do to take advantage of their natural growing cycles. Firstly a good fertilizer should be applied near the beginning of spring, as the plants are about to enter their growing spurt even in a desert landscape. This needs to be cut back in the summer, and then completely discontinue in the winter. If applied haphazardly, this extra feed can burn out a plant, causing root destruction and the plant’s untimely demise.

Watering habits should follow this same trend. In the spring and summer with the weather warmer and dryer, your plants will need more water to get by. Like with fertilizer though, an excess of water can also be harmful to your plants, so you need to cut back during the cooler months when your plants need, and can handle less sustenance.

Water not only helps with growth, but also works to keep the leaves and roots cool during those hot days. It can also be a good idea to lightly mist the leaves of your plants on hot days with a water bottle to further help in that regard.

Overwatering plants is the most common poor habit that indoor gardeners have, and this is magnified in winter, when plants can’t handle and digest as much water as they can in the summer. Always remember that no matter the unchanging conditions in your house, your indoor plant does change throughout the seasons based its own internal clock, and that you need to change with it.

Of course each plant species may require a slightly different approach, and in fact there are some houseplants that may work on a completely opposite routine. These are general rules that work with most houseplants, but be sure to take the time to familiarize yourself with each individual plant you own and discover any particular quirks it may have.

Where to Buy the Best Outdoor Power Equipment

Saturday, August 30th, 2008
by PJ Easton

Whether you enjoy working outdoors or not, outdoor power equipment is necessary in order to keep your property looking as nice as possible. Of course, you could let it grow very long and become those creepy neighbors that all the kids are afraid to come near, but that really isn’t as fun as it sounds.

Instead, it is easier to shell out a little bit of money that will certainly pay for itself over time. Outdoor power equipment is a necessity, and choosing where the best place to buy these necessities is the question that will be answered here.

All too often, when people need items for their home maintenance, they simply run to the nearest large chain home improvement store. After all, they are convenient and likely have exactly what you need. However, they are only a retail store.

There is a very slim chance that someone will be working in the outdoor power equipment section and even less likely that he or she will be able to answer the many questions you will have about different products and manufacturers.

When you are spending a good amount of money, it is always good to know what you are buying! So, maybe skip the large chain store for your outdoor power equipment, but feel free to head there the next time you need a light switch cover.

The next option to consider would be a local, but smaller, hardware store. You are likely to get more personal service at these places.

However, you may still run into the problem of lack of product knowledge. If you choose to purchase your outdoor power equipment here and accidentally cut off the tip of your pinky finger, then you won’t be able to blame them because you knew the risk you were taking from buying there.

So, now what do you do? Well, with all of your fingers intact, you can head straight to an outdoor power equipment dealer.

Yes, these retail establishments do exist. You know that when you walk into one of these stores that the people working there are going to have enough knowledge to answer all of your questions, and if they don’t know the answer, then you can bet they will call someone and find out!

Personal service and knowledge is so rare these days, but does exist and when it comes to personal safety and your wallet, it is a good idea to seek out these services.

Outdoor power equipment will make your home maintenance a lot easier as long as you have the right tools and the proper knowledge. It all begins in where you choose to spend your money.

Lighting - Although getting the right kind of lighting in your garden is important you need to factor in how much it will cost to run it once installed. However, there are few things that you can do when considering what sort of lighting you have in your landscape design which will help to keep these costs down. One way is to have solar powered rather than lighting run off a mains electrical supply installed.

The other things you can do if you choose to have lighting that runs off electricity is to only turn it on when it is required. For example when you are entertaining people in the garden late on a summer’s evening. The other thing to do is put in them energy saving bulbs.

Water Consumption - Yes having a water feature is wonderful but there are plenty of hidden costs associated with having them installed. The hidden costs that you need to think about if considering having such a feature in your garden is the electricity that will be needed to run it and how much more water you will be using on top of what you use normally in your home.

You need to be aware that if your water usage exceeds your designated amount then you may find that you are facing a bill for the excess you have used. A lot of people have water features installed as part of landscaping project only to then discover that they can’t run it because it is going to cost too much.

So when you are thinking about having your garden re-landscaped you need to taken into consideration the hidden costs we have mentioned above. If you don’t factor these in when devising your landscaping Tampa garden budget then you may find that once installed you can actually use them.
